Mike Parratto
Head Coach 

Head Coach Mike Parratto is a USA Swimming National Team Coach and the leader of the Riptide staff. Mike is an ASCA Level 5 coach with 42 years of coaching experience. Mike is best known for coaching highly-decorated Olympian Jenny Thompson as well as World Record holder and 2020 & 2024 Olympic medalist, Regan Smith. Mike has been a coach on many National Team trips, most recently on the coaching staff for the 2017 World Junior Championships and the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships. Mike, an American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Hall of Fame member, and the 2019 ASCA Coach of the Year is internationally renowned for his ability to challenge swimmers across all disciplines.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Amy Parratto
Head Age Group Coach 
Amy joined the Riptide coaching staff in the fall of 2012. She has coached both swimming and diving since 1983 in New Hampshire and Indiana. Amy is an ASCA Level 4 certified coach. In addition to her coaching duties, she serves as Riptide's team manager. Amy is a graduate of Wellesley College ('83) where she swam and dove all four years and earned a B.A. in Psychology and Studio Art. She is a five-time All-American in diving and was inducted into the Wellesley Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Amy and Mike have coached together since 1984. They have two grown daughters - Melissa (34) and Jessica (30), and a granddaughter Lucia (3). Jessica is a 2016 Rio Olympian in the individual and synchronized platform events, 2020(1) Tokyo Silver Medalist in synchronized platform diving as well as 2024 Paris Olympian in the synchronized platform event. In her spare time, Amy enjoys participating in Riptide's Masters practices, meets and open water swimming.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Ethan Sellers
Lead Coach - Senior Elite, Senior 3

Ethan started his swimming career when he was 7 years old. In addition to years of competitive swimming, Ethan played water polo both in high school in Illinois and college. Ethan began his coaching career with the Red Wing Swim Club, where he spent his first two years coaching. He later moved to Milwaukee where he got the opportunity to lead SWMKE (Swim Milwaukee) as their Head Coach for 3 years. During his time at SWMKE, Ethan got the unique opportunity to work closely with and learn from ASCA Level 5 coach and former USA Swimming National Team Coach, Bob White. Ethan has a passion for coaching and the sport of swimming, and enjoys challenging, motivating and inspiring swimmers to achieve their best. Ethan is an ASCA level 4 certified coach.

 

 
 
 

 
Laura Theodore
Lead Coach - Gold, Senior 1&2
Laura grew up in Minnesota swimming competing with Mach III Flyers and Wayzata High School before moving on to swim at the University of New Mexico.  Shortly after she retired from competing, she began coaching at Brackett’s Crossing Country Club and Bloomington Jefferson High School and went on to coach at several other high schools and Blackline Aquatics.  She took a break from coaching to focus on raising her two daughters and a career in leading and developing global customer success teams in the software industry.  Laura is thrilled to be “back in the game” coaching athletes and in her free time enjoys gardening and hiking with her dog, Bear.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Olga Grinberg
Lead Coach - 8&U, Rec Teams
Olga's journey in the world of swimming and education began in Kazakhstan, where she earned a teaching degree from the University of Business Management and Law. 

In Minnesota, Olga began her coaching career at a family-operated swim school. Currently, Olga oversees the community-based swim program, develops and runs specialized clinics, and coaches the 8 & Under group. She is an active member of Minnesota Swimming, serving on both the Safe Sport Committee and the Minnesota Officials Committee. Her expertise and leadership were recognized when she was selected as an Assistant Coach for Team Minnesota at the Central Zone Championships in 2023 and 2024. Olga is an ASCA Level 4 certified coach.

 

 

 

 

 
Ben Fowler
Lead Coach - Bronze
I started out swimming for Riptide in 7th grade, where I found out I was a natural breaststroker. I continued swimming throughout middle school and at Apple Valley High School. After high school I continued swimming at Gustavus Adolphus College before coming back to Riptide to help coach the Community Flex swim and with the Bronze and 8&U Groups. My primary stroke is breaststroke, and my favorite event is the 200 Breaststroke. Outside of the pool, I am a manager at Jersey Mike’s. Michelle Hopewell
Senior Elite, Gold
Michelle has coached all levels at Riptide since its inception. An elite swimmer herself, Michelle is former captain of the University of MN Women's Swim Team where she received a B.S. degree in Scientific and Technical Communications. She also served as an Age Group and Masters coach with Twin Cities Swim Team at the U of M for eight years. A full-time mother of three, she and her husband are busy with their active teenagers, all who have grown up through Wise and Riptide! She is credited with developing the Wave Swim Team at Wise Swim School and is one of the founding coaches of Riptide. Michelle is an ASCA Level 2 Certified Coach. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Jesse Taylor
Assistant Coach
Jesse swam competitively for most of her childhood starting at the age of 6. She took a short break during high school, but couldn’t stay away from swimming for long, returning to swim at Carleton College where she focused on distance freestyle. Now, Jesse swims masters, and focuses on triathlons, and other swimming/running events. Adam Osweiler
Assistant Coach
Adam began swimming when he was 10 years old with the Hanscom Seahawks in Massachusetts.  He continued his swim career after moving to Ohio with the Wright-Patt Flying Fish and the Dayton Raiders.  After high school he competed in college at Ohio University where he was named team captain his senior year.  After college he began his coaching career.  Adam coached for a year with the Cincinnati Marlins before moving to Iowa to be the Head Age Group Coach for the Iowa City Eels.  While with ICE, Adam coached swimmers to 148 team records and 20 state records.  Adam was named 2008 Iowa Age Group Coach of the Year.  He was also voted to coach the Iowa All Star and Iowa Zones team four times.  While coaching, Adam decided to become an elementary school teacher and has been a teacher for the past 10 years.  Currently, Adam is a 4 th grade teacher at Newport Elementary School.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Hannah Howell
Assistant Coach
Hannah grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and joined her first swim team at the age of 7. She swam competitively throughout her childhood and through high school, with her favorite event being the Individual Medley. Hannah's coaching experience began when she was 16 and includes being the lead coach for Hyperion Field Club (Iowa), assistant coach for Central Iowa Aquatics (Iowa), being head coach for the Lafayette Seals (Colorado), and some coaching for other sports as well. Katy Ploehn
Assistant Coach

Katy grew up in Brooklyn Park, MN swimming for Brooklyn Swim Club,  Park Center High School and the College of St.Catherine. As a swimmer, Katy swam distance freestyle and butterfly. Katy began coaching in college as an assistant coach for the Blaine High School Girls’ team and then continued on working for the YMCA as an Aquatic Program Director after she earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Physiology. Katy currently works for Independent School District 196 and lives in Apple Valley with her husband, Casey and 2 daughters, Emmy and Addy (who both swim for Riptide).

Melissa Persigehl
Assistant Coach

Peggy Kratz
Masters Co-Lead Coach
Peggy started swimming competitively at age 11. She attended Hamline University before transferring and graduating from The College of St. Catherine. Her coaching career began in the early 80’s when she became the head swim coach for both Derham Hall and Cretin High Schools. She has been part of the coaching staff for several USS teams, high schools and colleges working with novice to collegiate swimmers.  Peggy earned her master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from St. Cloud State University.  Currently she works at Fairview Ridges Hospital as a Cardiac Rehab Therapist and has been there for over 25 years.  She joined the Riptide Masters Team shortly after it began. As a masters swimmer, she enjoys competing in the pool, open water and occasional crazy e-postal swims.  She lives in Apple Valley with her husband.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Wendy Peterson
Masters Assistant Coach
Wendy Peterson started her swimming career in northern California as a 6 year old and was a competitive swimmer in all strokes until she reached high school where she focused mainly on distance events.  She moved to Madison, WI at the age of 13 and swam on her varsity high school swim team for 4 years, setting pool and state records in the 500 freestyle.  She also competed at Junior Nationals in numerous events during her high school years.  Wendy went on to be a Golden Gopher and swim varsity at the University of MN for 4 years.  She is passionate about swimming and has enjoyed competing in triathlons and now open water events as a Riptide Masters Team member.  Wendy enjoys working with the younger kids, watching them learn, having fun and improving in the water.  She lives in Eagan with her husband and 3 children.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Sarah Vrudney
Assistant Coach

Sarah has been in the water since age 4, growing up swimming summer club in a small Colorado town. In high school, she helped launch her school's first swim team, serving as captain and setting early records. She swam all four years at St. Kate’s while earning her nursing degree, competing in sprint freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM. A two-year captain, she earned All-Conference sportsmanship honors and set team records. Sarah currently works as a school nurse at Echo Park Elementary and joins Riptide after 8 years coaching with the Hurricanes in Hopkins, where she led the 11–12 age group for 5 years. She swims masters with Riptide and enjoys biking, hiking, and reading in her free time.

Adam has been involved in swimming since he was 7, beginning his journey at Wise before moving on to Riptide and swimming for Rosemount High School, where he focused on IM and breaststroke. At 16, he started teaching at Wise and later joined the Riptide coaching staff. Now, as a coach, Adam is dedicated to helping swimmers grow both in and out of the pool — improving their technique, building confidence, and developing a lasting love for the sport.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Zach McCarty
Assistant Coach

Coach Zach grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, swimming competitively with Swim Omaha and Omaha Westside High School. After high school Zach attended St. Olaf College, earning a BA in Economics and Political Science while continuing his swim career as a distance freestyle and IMer. His coaching career began during his senior year of college, working over two years as a lead coach for Northfield Swim Club and one as an assistant coach for Foxjets Swim Club.

 

Off deck, Zach works for the City of Richfield, creating and managing environmental programs as the City's Solid Waste Specialist. In his (limited) free time, Zach enjoys open water racing, exploring the Twin Cities on his gravel bike, and spending time with his dog Sammy.
